Keeping Your Job

With the rise in the unemployment rate in the country, we are also seeing a decline in a productive workforce. Those with jobs who, out of fear or a lack of motivation, are doing a substandard job. Some workers are so caught up in fear of being let go that they do not focus on being productive but focus on how to save their jobs. Others, who are angry at the world, do just what it takes to get by feeling the employer does not deserve their best.
What this does is set people up to loose their jobs not keep them. Employers need to get more from less and are no longer in a position to carry dead weight. If people are not being productive there is no reason anymore to keep them. Facts are there are a 100 people ready and able to do the job better.
Here are three keys to keeping your job. Of course this is no guarantee, nothing is, but I can promise you it will help and carry you a long way.
1) Be the best at what you do. Do not – I repeat – do not do only what is expected of you. Do more than expected. Look at the tasks before you and ask these questions:
What do I need to do to do this better than any one else?
How can I improve on how this is done?
What more can I do today than I did yesterday?
2) Show a solid work ethic. Be the poster child for good working habits. Be on time, focus on the job, do not gossip and work well with others. These simple things will do a great deal to improve your status.
3) Keep a positive attitude. Attitude is the most powerful tool you have. If you maintain a good attitude you will not only do better but you will be ready for whatever life gives you. John Maxwell calls attitude the difference maker. If you have tow people who do the same job, does it equally well and one has a bad attitude and one good and one has to be let go, who would you let go? That is a no brainier.
“The person who knows how will always have a job. But the person who knows why will be his boss.” Carl C. Wood. Good that you keep your job, better for you to become the boss.
