What’s Luck Got To Do With It

"The only good luck many great men ever had was being born with the ability
and determination to overcome bad luck."
- Channing Pollock
Actor/Magician

When it comes to success, I am amazed at how many people believe that it is some mystical power that falls on only the chosen few.  Think about it, how many times have you heard it said about someone who has achieved great success – or have said it yourself – that they were just lucky?  It is the idea that you can be in the right place at the right time and all the planets alien and you become a winner.  It would be nice, however, it never, ever happens.

As an Irish American who takes great pride in my Irish heritage I find it both humorous and sad to hear people talk of the “Luck of the Irish”.  Here is a people who have been oppressed by invading, hostile countries for most of their history.  They have suffered famine, had their culture, religion, and language outlawed and people see this as lucky?  The fact that the Irish culture and people have survived and today flourish, is that they are a determined and hopeful people who never gave up on themselves.  That is not luck.  That is successful living.

Success-minded people know that there is only one way to experience luck and that is to make it themselves.  Luck comes through hard work, a clear vision and determination to never quit till you achieve success.  Author and success expert, Brian Tracy put it this way: “I've found that luck is quite predictable. If you want more luck, take more chances. Be more active. Show up more often.”

Here is the secret (although there are no real secrets to those who seek truth) that many success-minded people know about being in the right place at the right time.

The Right Place
If I were to tell you exactly where the right place was to achieve success would you go there?  I believe many people would.  It would not matter how far it was or how long it took.  For the chance of being in that lucky place we would do whatever it took.  Well, here is that place: It is right where you are at this minute.  That’s right.  You need not go anywhere to find it because you are already there.  Success starts where you are if you are willing to take the action needed to make it happen.  Oh yes, it takes hard work and lots of concentrated effort, however, it only takes a bit of action right now to get started.

The Right Time
The right time is – yes, you guessed it – Right Now!  You heard the old saying, “There is no time like the present”, well, the fact is there is no time but the present.  You can do nothing about yesterday.  So no matter how badly or how many times you failed in the past, let them go.  It is over and done with and you are no longer there.  It also doesn’t matter what you plan to do tomorrow.  I believe that we should have a plan and know where we are going, however, we can do nothing about it till the future becomes the present.  The only thing you can do is to take the needed action right now.  Nothing happens without action, so let’s get started and you will see just how lucky you really are.
