Laughing At Heroes
"We make men
without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find
traitors in our mist."

When I have
told people of my love for the Boy Scouts and belief that the Scout Law is a
foundation for right living, I get looks like I am a bit off. People, good people, think that the Scout Law
is a bit outdated and impractical. I
find that very sad.
Success-Minded People need to understand that the principles that make us
a civil and righteous people are the same now as they always were. To think things like trustworthiness,
loyalty, helpfulness, kindness are old fashioned is to believe the Ten
Commandments are outdated (some believe that too). As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The
time is always right to do what is right.”
Too many of us have become complacent and fuss and whine about the state
of our society. The answer is not to
complain about it but to start changing it.
President Ronald Reagan said, “To sit back hoping that someday, some
way, someone will make things right is to go on feeding the crocodile, hoping
he will eat you last – but eat you he will.”
If things are going to change, they must start with you.
The qualities of a Success-Minded Person are those very qualities listed
in the Scout Law. It is never outdated
to do what is right, to care for others and to be an honorable and loyal
person. We must teach it to our children
and to those with whom we come in contact.
It is more than just not doing wrong, it is doing right. “Discernment” said Charles Spurgeon “is not a
matter of simply telling the difference between right and wrong; rather it is
telling the difference between right and almost right.”
Success-Minded People can change the world if they will only be willing
to change themselves and live as an example to those around them. Being a hero is not a corny thing that you
should fear. We have the power to
recapture our society and change things for the good. The only reason things went downhill was that
good people no longer fought for what was right. We resigned to the thinking of others who
told us we were no longer relevant. It’s
time to stand and say there is a right and a wrong. We believe in what is right, and that is the
most relevant thing there is.
