FACING FEAR

Fear may have many faces and may touch each of us in a different way, but it does touch each of us.  We are not all afraid of the same things and we all react differently to fear when we face it.  The important thing to recognize is that whatever the form or intensity, we all must deal with fear in our lives.  No matter how brave you may seem to others, you will have to face fear.  No matter how much you hope and pray that you will not have to deal with it, fear will come to your door.  It is a reality of life.  It is also something that you can both control and overcome.

The American General, George S. Patton said, “If we take the generally accepted definition of bravery as a quality which knows no fear, I have never seen a brave man. All men are frightened. The more intelligent they are, the more they are frightened.”  There is no shame in fear, nor is there guilt, remorse or regret.  Fear is a reality we all face.  Now, the question then is, what do we do with fear?

Success-minded people know that overcoming fear is not the removal of it from our lives.  That is a futile battle.  Overcoming fear is moving forward, achieving our goals and enjoying our success despite fear.  It is controlling fear rather than allowing fear to control us.  As the great actor, John Wayne once said, “Courage is being scared to death... and saddling up anyway.”  Success does not require the absence of fear, but it does require the development of courage.
