Learning New Gears

In 1975 filmmaker George Lucas got the idea for a new movie. It would require him to stretch his imagination farther than ever before. In 1977 he released the film Star Wars with some of the most advanced and amazing visual effects ever seen. When asked about this fantastic film, he said, “The trick was learning the difference between the impossible and the merely never-before-done-or- imagined.” The biggest obstacle he faced was simply that what he wanted to do had not been done before.

Success-minded people always have to face the never-done-before question. We are big thinkers and have great imaginations. Sadly we live in a world that tells us that impossible things cannot be done. All you have to do is look around to see that the impossible is done all the time. But there are still those who say they cannot achieve their dreams because of money, time, responsibilities, or the fact that it is impossible. Inventor George Washington Carver said, “Ninety-nine percent of failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.”

“Life is a ten-speed bike.  Most of us have gears we never use.”

Success-minded people always amaze themselves and others by achieving the impossible. It is a habit of the success-minded person to look for the impossible purposely. We cannot help ourselves. There is an excitement that happens when we do what we are told cannot be done. We believe the words of baseball great Sam Ewing, who said, “Nothing is so embarrassing as watching someone so something that you said could not be done.” Success-minded people do not mind embarrassing others in that way. It is perfectly fine to believe the impossible cannot be done; however, that is never an excuse for not doing it.

Stop believing those who tell you that your dream is impractical or impossible. If you can dream it, you can do it. Is it going to be easy?  No, most likely not. Is it going to take a lot of work? You can bet on that. I love the old saying from the U.S. Marine Corps, “The difficult we can do right now, the impossible will take a little longer.” You do not know the power you hold. You can do far more than you ever thought possible.

Success-minded people also believe that others can do the impossible and will encourage and promote the dreams of those around them. Poet, John Andrew Holmes said, “Never tell a young person that something cannot be done. God may have been waiting centuries for somebody ignorant enough of the impossible to do that thing.” You do not know who the person is who will change the world by doing the impossible. It may be that young person in your life. It may be you.

“…With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Matthew 19:26
