All Systems Go!
"Losing 10 pounds is a goal. Learning to eat right is a system - and
systems always trump goals."

Have you ever set the same goal more than once? Let's stay with the weight loss idea. Have you set a goal to lose that 10 or 20
pounds, lost it and then several months later you get all or most of it back? We start to think that either we did not set
the goal correctly or that we are doomed to be overweight. The reality is that the goal was good, however,
it was the wrong goal. You did not have
to lose weight, you needed to change your eating habits.
You
will find this true with many goals, we have a desired result we are trying to
obtain, however, the result is not the issue, it is what brings that result. How we establish the systems we need in our
life will make all the difference in how we succeed or fail at the achievement
of our goals and dreams. Let's look at
how goals and systems can work together.
Goals are the results / Systems are the plan
When we
are looking for a result in life, we will say you to lose that 10 pounds. That is a good and an achievable goal. The first thing you need to know is: How are
you going to lose that 10 pounds and keep it off. The goal is not just to lose it for a moment,
it is to live 10 pounds lighter. That
means you must have a system in place that will help you lose and then change
your eating habits so you keep it off.
Goals have deadlines / Systems keep going
Every
goal must have a time in which you want to achieve it. Let's say, you want to lose 10 pounds in 5
months. This is important because a goal
that is open ended has no power behind it.
W. Clement Stone said, "A goal without a deadline is just a
wish." The system to achieve that
goal is ongoing. We have many systems in
life. We must have a system for personal
growth, our business or career growth, our spiritual growth and so on. These systems keep us on track and moving
forward. Goals are then set within the
systems. The system is your plan for
achievement.
Goals change / Systems are forever
Your
goals will always be changing. Once you
achieve a goal you move on to the next goal in life. You will always be setting goals and
achieving them. As C.S. Lewis said,
"You are never too old to dream a new dream or set a new goal." The systems you have in place to achieve
those goals, if they work, will stay in place.
When you develop a system for eating right you will continue to use that
system in the future. When you have a
system for personal growth, you will keep that system and keep growing. Systems are the way we live and they are the
life blood of our success.
