There Is No Second Place
"How many seconds does it take to win second? As many as it takes to win first
- if you don't use
them properly."

When people
have worked hard at competing in a race and come in second, you never see then
jumping up and down about it. The fact
is, second, no matter how you dress it up, is not first. Even if you get some kind of award for
second, it is still not first. No matter
how we pretend that "everyone one is a winner", only the winners
believe it's true.
The issue here is not that we
all have to come in first to show that we are doing our best. There will be times that you do your very
best and still come in second or even third.
The key to success is that we never settle for second place. Success-minded people always move forward
with the intent of coming in first. If
they come in second, they look at what they did; what they can do better; and
make the changes needed.
If you give your best. If you strive for excellence in all you
do. If you never settle for second
place, you will make it to first. You
have done all that is needed to win so it is just a case of a bit more. Success-minded people know that they can do a
bit more. They can learn from mistakes;
learn from what works and gain the bit more needed to win in the end.
Never let discouragement
overtake you when you hit second place.
Allow it instead to inspire you to push a bit more. Ask yourself, what you did that you should not
so, or do better, or do different.
Discouragement and giving up is what losers do. They believe that "I just can't do
it" and "It's too hard" are excuses to give up. Successful people know that they can do it. Maybe they didn't do it this time, but they
will. They never give up and therefore,
they never loose. In the words of the
great Babe Ruth, "It impossible to beat a man who never gives up."
