Never Let Go
Rowland Hussey Macy (1822-1877) was a
man who decided long ago that he wanted his own business. His desire was not to be successful at
someone else’s business but rather to achieve success, wealth, and security at
his own business. At the age of 21, he
opened a small dry goods store in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Shortly after opening the store failed. Rowland Macy was not one to let a failure
stop him. He soon after opened a second
store, which also failed. Then a third
store, which also failed. Then he opened
a forth store which brought him the same fate as the other three.
The one very important thing Macy got
from all his failed experiences was a powerful education. He learned from every failure and each time
he did things a bit different and a bit better.
Those lessons lead him to make the most drastic changes of all. Macy moved from the small town to the big
city. In 1858 he opened a new and bigger
store in downtown New York City. He
called the store, R.H. Macy Dry Goods.
The rest, as they say, is history.
The store flourished and remains a mainstay of American business today.
Success-minded people are people with
a dream. It is not some dream that is
described with words like, “I wish”, or “I hope”, or “Maybe someday”. Their dreams are “I will”, and “I can”. There is no doubt about the outcome. There will be failures, lessons to learn and
difficulties to overcome. These are all
welcome and expected. What they are not
is accepted.
Do you have a dream that seems to
bring more failures than victories? No
matter if it is to start your own business, write a book or go to the moon that
dream is yours and it just will not go away.
Here is the secret (although it is a well-known secret by all who
achieve success) to making that dream a reality. Never, never, never give up. Do not quite, do not seek something
different, and do not surrender to what others tell you to do. Hold on to that dream and no matter how long
it takes, see it all the way to success.
As a success-minded person you have
faced the truth that real success never comes easy. There are no such things as overnight
successes. You will not hit a home run
the first time at bat. Success comes
with a price tag. The fee is hard work,
long hours and the ability to start over as many times as it takes.
Yes, it can and will be hard to make
the dream come true, but when you do, and you will, it is a sweet victory and
better than you have ever thought it could be.
Remember the words of the great Yogi Berra who said, “You just can’t
beat a guy who will never give up.”
