You Don't Win Second Place
When people
have worked hard at competing in a race and come in second, you never see then
jumping up and down about it. The fact
is, second, no matter how you dress it up, is not first. Even if you get an award for second place, it is still not first. No matter how we pretend that "everyone
one is a winner", only the winners believe it's true.
The issue here is not that we
all have to come in first to show that we are doing our best. There will be times that you do your very
best and still come in second or even third.
The key to success is that we never settle for second place. Success-minded people always move forward
with the intent of coming in first. If
they come in second, they look at what they did; what they can do better; and
make the changes needed.
If you give your best. If you strive for excellence in all you
do. If you never settle for second
place, you will make it to first. You have
done all that is needed to win so it is just a case of a bit more. Success-minded people know that they can do a
bit more. They can learn from mistakes;
learn from what works and gain the bit more needed to win in the end.
"How many seconds does it take to win second? As many as it takes
to win first
- if you don't use them
properly."

Never let discouragement
overtake you when you hit the second
place. Allow it instead to inspire you
to push a bit more. Ask yourself, what
you did that you should not do, or do better, or do differently. Discouragement
and giving up is what losers do. They
believe that "I just can't do it" and "It's too hard" are
excuses to give up. Successful people
know that they can do it. Maybe they
didn't do it this time, but they will.
They never give up and therefore, they never lose. In the words of the
great Babe Ruth, "It impossible to beat a man who never gives up."
