I Love This Job!
Dr. Charles Mayo, the
founder of the world-famous Mayo Clinic, made a wild statement when he said,
“There is no fun like work.” This is the way it was meant to be. Somewhere we
came up with the idea that work is terrible and that we should do our best to
do as little work as possible. Remember that work was around before the fall.
Adam tended the garden before Eve, the apple or the serpent came into the
picture. It only became labor after the fall.
The problem that
many have is not that they hate work, but they hate the work they do. Success-minded
people know that to find fulfillment in your job, you need three elements, 1)
something that plays to your strength set, 2) something that makes you feel
like you are contributing to society, 3) something you love to do. When these
elements are all present, you have the closest thing to the “dream job.”
“Find something you
like to do so much that you’d gladly do it for nothing, and if you learn to do
it well, someday people will be happy to pay you for it.”

Does this mean
things become easy, and there is no real work? The old saying, “Find a job you
love, and you will never have to work again,” is not true. The fact is, when
you are doing what you love to do, you work harder and longer. It is just that
you have joy in what you do. You feel that you are making things better and
adding value to the world around you.
We, as human beings,
were never created to be idle. You are made to work. Roman philosopher and poet
Horace said, “Life grants nothing to us mortals without hard work.” This idea
that people have about not working or only doing the least they have to in
order get by is so destructive to them and our society as a whole. Hard work
will not kill you, but laziness will make you wish that you were dead.
I hear so many
excuses from people who are unemployed and not looking for work, every reason
from the economy to not being ready for a job (whatever that means). There are
opportunities everywhere for you, not only to work but to do the things you
love. Thomas A. Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it
is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” You need to work. The longer you
put it off, the more damage it will do to you.
Success-minded people
know that hard work is the price for success. If you do not pay the price, you
will not enjoy the reward. Stop seeing work as something to avoid. Enjoy it,
embrace it, and you will find the satisfaction you are looking for in
life.
“A man will be
satisfied with good by the fruit of his words, and the deeds
of a man’s hands will return to him.”
Proverbs 12:14
