THE COST OF A DREAM
I once heard
two young women talking in a restaurant about how one was going to write a
book. She went on and on about how great
the book will be and how she will gain fame and fortune through its
publication. The grand description was
followed by the other woman saying, "Like that's gonna happen." The future writer proudly said, "I can
dream, can't I? Besides, dreams are free
and I can afford them." Sad to say
however that dreams are not free at all.
Wishful thinking that never comes to reality, that is free. Dreams, however, come with a hefty price tag.
There are a lot of people who
wish they could do this or that. They do
nothing to bring it about and never take real action. Some talk about what they "would"
do it they had the time, found the right person, won the lottery. Here is a proven fact: If you do nothing to
achieve your dreams now, you will not do it even if you won the lottery.
Success-minded people know that
a dream without action is just a wish.
Without action, nothing happens!
Dreaming is a wonderful thing, but real dreamers dream with every
intention of making those dreams come true.
To them, it is not some hopeful
desire of what could be, but rather a solid prophecy of what will be. They believe in the dream and they are fully
prepared to pay the price - no matter how costly - to make that dream come
true.
"Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price
to make them come true."
- Leon Suenens
(1904-1996)
Former
Archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels
So, what is the price of a
dream? That depends on the dream one
has. There are a few things that all
dreamers must understand and be willing to pay.
That is hard work. It is not easy
to bring a dream into reality. You work
long and hard to see it come to be. It
will cost in time. Success-minded people
know that they must willingly set aside instant gratification for that which
comes later. They know that it may be
years before they see their dreams come true, but they will spend those years working
for it every single day.
Above all, success-minded people
never give up. They will face
difficulties; they must be flexible and change their approach many times. They will even fail - more than once - in the
process, but they will never give up.
Persistence is the key to all success.
If you quit, you fail for good -
every time. If you don't quit, you win - every time.
It all comes down to whether you
really desire to achieve your dream or if you are just wasting some thinking
time. If you really want it, there is
nothing in the universe that can stop you.
Remember the powerful words of race car champion, Mario Andretti who
said, "Desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and
commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal - a commitment to excellence
- that will enable you to attain the success you seek."
