Where Have All the Heroes Gone
I am so grateful that I got to grow up in a time when heroes were a big part of a child’s life. We had Davy Crocket, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, Neil Armstrong, and many others. The things they had in common was their courage, their sense of right, and wholesome life. We wanted to be like them and knew that meant living right and standing up for what is right.
Since the 60’s too
many heroes became known for their rebellion and wild lives, Rock and movie
stars replaced those who did brave deeds and made life better. Young people
gave up wanting to be doctors, astronauts, explorers, and inventors to be
rappers, rock stars, and criminals. The desire to be good and stand for the right
was replaced with the desire to be wild and rebellious.
“Not to walk in the
straight and narrow way yourself is to give the devil the
biggest kind of a
chance to get our children.”
Billy Sunday
1862-1935
Evangelist
The great writer and
thinker, C.S. Lewis, said, “We are what we believe we are.” Too many people
believe they are victims and outcasts in the world. They think they must rebel
to achieve anything. That is why so many are unhappy, unproductive, and lost.
In their mind, they are nothing, and therefore, stand for nothing. They give
real meaning to the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who said, “If a man
hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.”
God has created each
of us to be something great. The late humorist Erma Bombeck advised, “Don’t
confuse fame with success. Madonna is one; Helen Keller is the other.” The
world is filled with true heroes that you can follow and use as an example.
The success-minded person
knows that the most excellent example of a true hero is you. They know that you
do not have to invent something great; you have to be something great. You do
not have to fight a war; you have to stand for what is right. Your example will
inspire others and will make you a hero in their eyes. As Dr. Billy Graham
said, “Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of
others are often stiffened.”
You owe it to your
children, your friends, and the world to be a true hero. Follow the principals
of success-minded people. It may sound simple, but I dare you to try it.
Old-fashion? Doing what is right is never out of date. Being a hero will bring
you to life. It gives you purpose and a sense of destiny. Life has meaning, and
you feel the power that is provided by God to all who seek to live right.
